Blog 06- Sexual Harassment Procedures
Sexual Harassment Procedures
Sexual harassment can take many different forms. It has a huge negative influence on equality as well. Despite this, sexual harassment continues to be a problem for women in all types of workplaces and at all levels of management (Women in the Workplace, 2021). Women are significantly more likely than men to be victims of sexual harassment because they lose power, are in more vulnerable and uncomfortable positions, lack self-confidence, or have been conditioned to suffer silently.
Prepare line supervisors to handle sexual harassment complaints
A line manager is likely to be the first senior staff member to become aware of a sexual harassment situation. They may receive a complaint from an employee or witness it firsthand. Ensure that the line manager:
· Recognize the gravity of sexual harassment and the harm it can cause.
· Know the latest harassment laws and what constitutes sexual harassment.
· Have the necessary people skills to deal with sexual harassment allegations fairly and compassionately.
· Know and follow the steps for filing a sexual harassment complaint.
· If necessary, seek HR assistance
Establish a harassment policy
Having a comprehensive policy on sexual harassment ensures that all employees are treated fairly and equally, and provides management with the tools they need to handle a complaint.
A typical policy will include the following provisions:
· Define harassment so that employees and supervisors understand what is and are not acceptable, as well as how and when they can file a complaint.
· Make it clear what actions your company will take in the case of sexual harassment.
· Make it crystal clear that sexual harassment will not be tolerated.
Taking the Action
Informally dealing with a complaint
Not all forms of harassment can be dealt with informally; serious misconduct necessitates the establishment of a formal procedure from the start. After you've established that there's an issue, talk to the harasser about it and ask them to stop. Ascertain that they are aware of the gravity of the situation. Throughout the process, be supportive of the complainant.
Formally dealing with a complaint
Formal processes may be required if an employee files a formal complaint or if you determine that the situation cannot be resolved informally. In most cases, this will entail:
Informing both parties
A fair and thorough investigation
Keeping written records of all proceedings
Making your decision
Further action if necessary
